Ganesh Suryawanshi was inspired to work for other mentally disabled children because of his younger sister, who is mentally challenged. Despite financial difficulties, he decided to face the situation and pursued training to become a special educator for mentally disabled children. After gaining experience for several years in schools for differently-abled children, he realized that many mentally disabled children, especially in economically weaker sections of Chunchale village, were deprived of special education.
He observed that there were no special schools for these children in the area, and due to a lack of awareness among society and parents, some households had two or three mentally special children. Because of economic constraints, parents had to go out for work and could not provide full-time care to their children. Ganesh Suryawanshi understood that if these children received proper special education, they could become self-reliant and rehabilitated.
Initially, he found 10 mentally disabled children and started a free special school for them in a small room. To ensure that the work was sustainable and socially supported, he, along with socially conscious individuals, founded the Shri Siddhivinayak Disabled Rehabilitation and Education Society in 2010.
